Grand prize winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

Thomas from Blairstown, NJ!

Insect Shield Apparel

Thomas is the randomly drawn, grand prize winner of the tick-bite protection contest from TERC! He will be receiving clothing pre-treated with tick repellent from Insect Shield.

Thank you again to all who participated. For everyone who didn't win tick repellent clothing, Christmas would be a great time to start building your tick repellent clothing wardrobe for next year. Insect Shield provides a wide variety of clothing that you can purchase online. More varieties also available from L.L.Bean.

If you are not quite ready to start wearing repellent treated clothing everyday during tick season, then be sure to check out our newest application, the Tick Bite Locator. It will guide you to the most likely spots to check for different species and stages of ticks you might encounter.

Final winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

Denise from Kingston, RI

Hidden in the Leaves Contest Winner

What is the #1 action you take to protect yourself and your family against disease-transmitting tick bites?

Denise:

"Besides using Advantix on my dog every month year round (yes, some stage of the deer tick seems to be lurking in every month), I tuck my pants into my socks when we go on our daily walks on the trails in the woods."

TERC Response:

Advantix has the added benefit of quick knockdown of unattached ticks, so that hungry ticks are less likely to move from the dog to you or other family members. And your dog probably doesn’t care what you look like (pants tucked into socks), as long as you take him for a walk. Consider adding permethrin tick repellent to your shoes, socks and pants for added safety.

The contest is now over, congratulations to all our winners. We'll announce the grand prize winner next week. Remember: the grand prize winner will receive clothing that is pre-treated with an effective tick repellent.

Sixth winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

Eric from Bellefonte, PA

Hidden in the Leaves Contest Winner

What is the #1 action you take to protect yourself and your family against disease-transmitting tick bites?

Eric:

"My action is to teach tick inspection after hunting in the woods to new students at the Hunters Safety Course programs in Pennsylvania. Many students and parents do not realize the small dangers in the woods and how to best prevent tick bites when hunting."

"I once had a deer that I harvested in the Yukon. Returning home with both the carcass and family, my kids were in the back seat and the carcass was behind the seat where my daughter was sitting. Later that night my daughter felt something on the back of her neck. It was a tick crawling up her neck! Never again will I put a deer carcass or any of my animals caught in traps in the car. We now regularly check before we get into the car when we leave the woods."

TERC Response:

Once the deer carcass starts to cool, ticks that were attached start to detach and can look for other hosts to sink their mouthparts into. Even putting outerwear from a hike into sealed bags in the trunk can sometimes prevent later problems from wandering ticks. Thanks for this very insightful tip, especially for hunters.

One week left! We'll be picking our grand prize winner after receiving responses this final week.

Fifth winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

Mary from Wakefield, RI

Hidden in the Leaves Contest Winner

What is the #1 action you take to protect yourself and your family against disease-transmitting tick bites?

Mary:

"My number one action is to build the tick check right into the night-time routine with our children-right after the bathtub and right before toothbrushing."

TERC Response:

Great idea! Hopefully as the kids get older they will adopt this self-checking behavior as a way to keep from getting sick. Probably still a good idea to supplement this protection with others, like everyday wearing of tick repellent clothing.

Congratulations Mary! Remember that one of our weekly winners will be randomly drawn to win a grand prize, clothing that is pre-treated with an effective tick repellent from Insect Shield. Only two more weeks left to enter.

Fourth winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

Thomas from Blairstown, NJ

Hidden in the Leaves Contest Winner

What is the #1 action you take to protect yourself and your family against disease-transmitting tick bites?

Thomas:

"I set out permethrin Tick Tubes around my property every year, spring and summer."

TERC Response:

And then all of the mice on your property work for you to kill disease-transmitting ticks...that’s smart!

Congratulations Thomas, let us know what you think of "Hidden in the Leaves". Only 3 Weeks To Go! Check back next Friday to find out who our next winner is. Also, stay tuned for information on our next contest beginning in December.

Third winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

Ann from Newport, RI

Hidden in the Leaves Contest Winner

What is the #1 action you take to protect yourself and your family against disease-transmitting tick bites?

Ann:

"Now that I have been bitten by a deer tick I will be vigilant about doing daily tick checks."

TERC Response:

That’s good advice for everyone. Be sure to check places where clothing constricts on the skin.

Congratulations Ann, enjoy your copy of "Hidden in the Leaves". With only a few more weeks to participate and win, we encourage visitors to write in with their answer.

Second winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

José from Lincoln, RI

Hidden in the Leaves Contest Winner

What is the #1 action you take to protect yourself and your family against disease-transmitting tick bites?

José:

"Wear protective clothing."

TERC Response:

Be sure that your clothing and shoes are treated with permethrin tick repellent - with tick bite protection built right into the clothes.

Congratulations José, we'll be sending you a copy of "Hidden in the Leaves". TERC visitors, please take a moment some time next week and send in your answer. If you're serious about tick bite prevention, this is a great opportunity to win a free copy of our DVD “Hidden In The Leaves”.

First winner of tick-bite protection from TERC!

Dan, Horse Farm Owner, North Smithfield, RI

Hidden in the Leaves Contest Winner

What is the #1 action you take to protect yourself and your family against disease-transmitting tick bites?

Dan:

"A couple of free-ranging flocks of guinea hens. No ticks on people, and the animals work for me for nothing."

TERC Response:

We’ve never found guinea fowl to be that effective against deer ticks, most probably due to their aversion for spending much time at the forest edge or in the forest (afraid of being eaten), where deer ticks thrive. Wild turkeys, however... now that’s a bird that might be a good deer tick predator! Maybe the guinea hens are protecting you from American dog ticks, though, in more open landscapes.

Congratulations to Dan and thank you for sharing your preventive action! Remember, weekly winners get a free copy of our DVD “Hidden In The Leaves”. Didn’t win this time? Enter again (one entry per week -- contest runs until Nov 30), or look for our next contest to start. You also can purchase a copy of “Hidden In The Leaves” and then help us get the tick-bite protection message out. After watching the DVD, consider sharing it with friends, or even donate it to your local library or school.
